(Must provide 2 different forms):
- High School Photo ID
- Mail with Your Name & Address (information must match what is on file in the UMN system)
- Social Security Card
- Sign on to MyU
- Certified Birth Certificate
You MUST have a primary form
of ID to receive your first U Card
Approved Primary Forms of IDs
for a First or Replacement U Card:
- US Passport
- US Passport Card
- Foreign Passport
- US State or Territory Driver’s License
- US or State Agency ID Card
- US Military ID Card
- US Military Dependent’s ID Card
- US Coast Guard Merchant Marine Card
- Tribal Card
If you are a full time online student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities you may request your U Card be mailed to you. However, this process may take up to 2 weeks as we must go through a verification process. Please email [email protected] if you are a full time online student and you would like to start the process of receiving your U Card.
CIS teachers may request U Cards be mailed to their classroom by submitting students photos to the U Card Office. To start this process please email [email protected] and note you are inquiring about receiving U Card for your CIS class.
PSEO students can receive their U Card at the U Card Office during their Orientation.
PSEO students are eligible to submit their photo for their U Card via Photo Upload. (Underlined words = link to ‘Photo Upload’ page)
If you receive a U Card as a PSEO student and then apply and are accepted to the UMN Twin Cites for your Undergraduate Education, you will use the same U Card. You are only eligible for a free U Card every 5 years.
Transfer students will receive a U Card at their Orientation. If you have a U Card from a UMN system campus, you need a UMN Twin Cities U Card as the UMN Twin Cities U Card has different technology on the card.

Staff and Faculty will receive their U Card at the U Card Office in Coffman Memorial Union.
1st Year Students will receive their U Card from the U Card Office on day 2 of their Orientation.
1st Year Students are eligible to submit their own photo for their U Card via Photo Upload (underlined words = link to ‘Photo Upload’ page) and then pick up their U Card at Orientation. Otherwise, a photo will be taken at the U Card Office.
