The University is in the process of transitioning to a mobile/digital version of the U Card.
Mobile credentials replace physical ID cards with digital versions stored in smartphone wallets, allowing students, faculty and staff to use their mobile phones and smartwatches for access across campus.
Frequently asked questions
What is the timeline?
While subject to change for a variety of factors, the general target timeline includes rolling out the mobile credential to pilot campuses during calendar year 2027, with all campuses following in calendar year 2028.
Specific communication will be sent out as campuses begin rolling out the credential.
Do I have to use a mobile device?
No. The University will follow a “mobile first” approach, which means that we will encourage new students, staff, and faculty to provision a mobile credential when they join the University. If they are unable to provision a mobile credential a physical U Card will remain available.
Can I have a physical and mobile credential?
No. For security reasons, you will only be able to have a mobile credential on a single device or a single physical credential.
Can I have it on my watch and phone?
Yes. You will be able to set up the credential for use on your phone and a connected smartwatch.
Where can I use mobile credentials?
Any place you currently use your U Card – meal plans, printing, door access and more.
- Non-compliant door access systems not managed by the Department of Public Safety will not be compatible; units must transition those doors to the University’s access control system.
Will this be available on my device?
The credential will be available on your preferred mobile device.
Who is eligible?
- Students, faculty and staff will be eligible.
- Person-of-Interest and Sponsored Accounts will be eligible.
What if my phone dies?
We strongly encourage community members to keep their devices charged, however, certain phones have power reserve functions. This means you can still use your U Card even when the device's battery is depleted.
